Of all the modern cruise ships the Crown Princess is one of my favourites. She and her sister ship the Regal Princess are designed by the architect Renzo Piano. (Perhaps best known for the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Kansai Airport in Japan.) He used the shape of a dolphin and morphed it into a ship thus combining nature and technology in one design. This makes the ship not just a construction but a ship with a more poetic kind of look. Another quality I like are the little streamlined features that find their reference in the 1930 designs like those of Norman Bel Geddes. A last note: in the beginning of 2002 the Crown Princess will no longer be in service of Princess Cruises. |
